Jaguars Considering Full-Time Defensive Role for Travis Hunter?

More snaps at cornerback could be on the horizon for Travis Hunter.

The latest report on Travis Hunter could shake up his dynasty outlook. According to NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe, the Jacksonville Jaguars are planning on deploying the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner full-time on defense, with only occasional snaps on offense. If that happens, it would be a major shift from his rookie season, where Hunter predominantly played as a receiver while moonlighting as a cornerback.

For fantasy, obviously, this would be a disaster for anyone who’s counting on Hunter to be a wideout. Unless you play in an IDP league, Hunter would lose most of his fantasy relevance if he’s logging most of his snaps on defense. For the Jaguars, it makes sense given their crowded WR room with Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington at WR, not to mention Brenton Strange as a weapon at TE. In 2025, Hunter appeared in only seven games before tearing his LCL, finishing his rookie year with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one TD. On defense, he had 15 tackles and three passes defensed.

Travis Hunter "Looks Great"

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen, in an interview with Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, described Travis Hunter as looking great right now as he recovers from an LCL tear in his right knee.

Coen added that Hunter is “mentally tough” and has “attacked” his recovery the right way. He further notes that the Jaguars will “remain fluid” with where they need Hunter “on this day, or as a team”.

Hunter is coming off a disappointing fantasy season, averaging only 9.1 fantasy points per game. However, his usage in the offense was trending upward in the two games before his season-ending injury. He topped 40 routes per game in weeks 6 and 7 before injuring his knee in practice ahead of week 8. With Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, and Brian Thomas Jr. all under contract, the Jags may look to use Hunter more on defense in 2026. It appears as if Coen, much like fantasy players is still trying to figure out which side of the ball Hunter will play the most this upcoming season.

Travis Hunter Season Over

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie wide receiver and defensive back Travis Hunter has been placed on injured reserve, ending his season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars placed Travis Hunter on season ending injured reserve. Hunter hasn’t played since week seven when he broke out with eight catches for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Hunter suffered a non-contact injury in practice and now it’s confirmed that it was an LCL injury. Hunter is expected to be ready for next season assuming no setbacks.

The Jaguars passing game has struggled this season and Hunter’s big game in week seven seemed like things were improving. Jacksonville added Jakobi Meyers at the trade deadline and still have Brian Thomas Jr., but the Jaguars are likely to continue to disappoint in the passing game.

Hunting for Travis: Jacksonville No. 2 Overall Pick Hunter Headed to IR
4 months ago

Jacksonville two-way star Travis Hunter, chosen second overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, has landed on the IR

If you’ve been searching box scores for Jacksonville’s coveted top pick, Travis Hunter, perhaps your first stop should be the IR. Hunter went down with a non-contact injury to his right knee during practice and will be placed on the injured reserve indefinitely while the team evaluates the extent of the injury.

The 2025 season has not gone the way that the Jaguars had envisioned for the star wide receiver/cornerback that they traded up to No. 2 to select. Hunter has struggled in the role of WR2 across from Brian Thomas Jr. Hunter has amassed 28 catches on 45 targets for 298 yards and one touchdown (Oct. 19) on offense. On defense, Hunter is responsible for 15 tackles and a trio of pass-breakups.

While Hunter’s injury is evaluated, the placement on injured reserve means he is on the shelf for at least four games. The wideout would be eligible to return Week 13 at the earliest. Should there be further cause for concern, the team would not hesitate to shut him down for the remainder of the season, according to head coach Liam Coen.

Jacksonville is currently 4-3 and in second place in the NFL South. The team has four manageable games upcoming, including the Raiders, Texans, Chargers, and Cardinals. Only Los Angeles has more than three wins.

For fantasy purposes, Dyami Brown and explosive third-year slot man Parker Washington each stand to see upticks in usage.

Travis Hunter Set to Be An Every Down Receiver
5 months ago

The Jacksonville Jaguars plan to have Travis Hunter be an every down wide receiver Week 1 against the Carolina Panthers.

Buckle up fantasy football managers!  Rookie dual threat Travis Hunter is set to primarily play wide receiver in Week 1 with a situational role at cornerback. This is welcome news for those who have been drafting him all offseason amidst the fear of a more even split.

The big winners here are fantasy managers who play in IDP leagues. Hunter will be able to be slotted in the defensive back slot while generating points as a wide receiver. This is a cheat code not seen since Taysom Hill of the Saints was slotted as a tight end yet being deployed as a quarterback. Also, those who believed in Travis Hunter as the WR1 in this rookie class are feeling an extra pep in their step.

The Jaguars are claiming that Hunter’s role will change on a weekly basis, but it is difficult to envision Trevor Lawrence and the collective offense not clamoring for Hunter to be used on offense. Fire up Travis Hunter everywhere in a juicy matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

Travis Hunter Looking Great at Wide Receiver at Jacksonville Camp
7 months ago

Travis Hunter has been making a strong impression at wide receiver during Jaguars training camp.

Number two overall pick Travis Hunter has been looking great at wide receiver during Jacksonville Jaguars training camp.  There have been concerns about how Hunter’s playing time will be divvied up between defensive back and wide receiver so it’s great to hear that he’s turning heads on the offensive side of the ball.

The Jaguars’ wide receiver room is led by Brian Thomas Jr. but Hunter has high expectations to contribute early after Jacksonville traded so much capital to move up and draft him. Head Coach Liam Coen said “It was great.” when discussing being able to get Hunter reps on both sides of the ball during a recent scrimmage.

Hunter is currently going regularly in the fifth round of drafts and despite this praise from training camp don’t expect his ADP to shift much. He’s still competing with Thomas, Dyami Brown and Brenton Strange for targets while the playing time concerns linger.
